Loading a Trace Capture File

You can load a trace capture file with the Intel® GPA Platform Analyzer either in local or network mode

  • local mode – both the Intel GPA Platform Analyzer and the application run on the same machine

  • network mode – the Intel GPA Platform Analyzer runs on the analysis machine and the application runs on the target machine

NOTE

When targeting lower performance computers, such as Netbooks, or analyzing complex games, you should run in network mode (client/server configuration) with the Intel® GPA Platform Analyzer running on a powerful system with at least 2-4 GB of memory.

To capture a trace file, launch the application via the Intel® GPA Monitor and use the default capture keyboard-shortcut combination Ctrl+Shift+T. Intel® GPA will automatically generate a unique file name to use when saving the trace data. For more information, refer to Launching an Application.

NOTE

The trace capture file must be created on the same system that you are using to analyze the file.

Loading a Trace Capture File in Local Machine

The recommendation is to load a trace capture file in local mode:

  1. Make sure that the Intel® GPA Monitor is launched.
  2. Launch the Intel® GPA Platform Analyzer.
  3. In the Open Trace Capture File dialog window, select <This Machine> and click Connect.
  4. In the Trace Capture Files field double-click the file to be analyzed, or select it and click Open.

    NOTE

The Trace Capture Files field contains only capture files that have been captured with the Intel® GPA version that is currently in use and that reside in the user’s home directory: under Microsoft Windows Vista* OS and Microsoft Windows* 7 OS the path is C:Users%USERNAME%DocumentsGPA_2012_R1.

    NOTE

When the machine on which the Intel GPA Monitor is launched hibernates, the connection to the Intel GPA Monitor is aborted.
When the machine on which the Intel GPA Monitor is launched goes to the power saving mode, or when the screen saver starts (that is, the console locks), you can get incorrect data. To get accurate measurements, close and reopen the Intel GPA Monitor and the Intel GPA Platform Analyzer.

  5. To open another trace capture file, select Open from the Intel GPA Platform Analyzer File menu.
  6. Follow steps 3-4 of the current workflow.

Loading a Trace Capture File in Network Mode

Use network mode only when you target lower performance computers, such as Netbooks, or analyze complex games.

Use this mode to copy trace capture files generated on the target machine to your local machine for further analysis.

To load the trace capture file in network mode:

  1. Make sure that the Intel® GPA is installed on the target and analysis machines.
  2. Make sure that the Intel® GPA Monitor is launched on the target machine.
  3. Launch the Intel GPA Platform Analyzer on the analysis machine.
  4. In the Open Trace Capture File dialog window, type the IP address of the target machine you want to connect to or select it from the drop-down list and click Connect.
  5. In the Trace Capture Files field, select a capture file residing on the target machine and click Open.

    NOTE

The Trace Capture Files field contains only capture files that have been captured with the Intel® GPA version that is currently in use and that reside on the target machine in the user’s home directory: under Microsoft Windows Vista* OS and Microsoft Windows* 7 OS the path is C:Users%USERNAME%DocumentsGPA_2012_R1.

  6. To open another trace capture file, select Open from the Intel GPA Platform Analyzer File menu.
  7. Follow steps 3-4 of the current workflow.

You can also load a file by dragging and dropping it to the Intel GPA Platform Analyzer main window.
